Househunting and School

As lovely as it was pottering around looking at lovely Beach Clubs we did have to remind ourselves we need a house to live in and for the kids to do their trial days at school.

When we first evolved this ‘6 months in Bali’ idea we found it very daunting with all the conflicting information on everything so found a company called ‘One Year In Bali’ https://ouryearinbali.com where Simone from OZ has collated everything you need for a little black book or who is who and what to base your prices on.

What once was a third world Country is now a hedonistic hideaway for Ozzies and Russians with money. The rent situation is insanity, for a simple 3 bedroom concrete villa with air con, a pool and minimal kitchen - (yes I am talking a two hob and microwave situation. The air fryers have made it here as nobody has an oven!) you are looking at anything between £2k-4k a month rent!!!!

D and I did a few house viewings and came back deflated. For the price they were charging we’d have a penthouse in Chelsea for that rent….so we are still homeless for when we return from our Lombok and Gilis vaccay.

All the areas we were looking in were also dependent on the kid’s school, and this is in Umalas which is fine for bikes cutting through paddy field one way systems but another 30mins for cars…argh.

ProEducation in Umalas has primary classes all the way up to Senior. Nula was kitted out in a blue polo shirts and black shorts and Jake in a double black ensemble. Both had a very cool curly Indonesian Batik style print on the polo shirt. Nula loved it storming in and absorbing everyone and everything in her usual bubbly manner.

Jake’s however was a little harder, firstly they have roaming classrooms so he had to find the class, then when we did we opened the door to a row of daunting boys who seemed to already have formed a strong gang sitting thick as thieves at the back with only 3 girls on the side.

His body language said it all the hunched shoulders and meek look, I felt the lump in my throat just imagining being 12 again and having that greeting.

However by the end of the day when we picked them up he seemed more relaxed. Revelling in the fact the boys were all unruly and swore at the teachers and then had a full on punch up fight over football and how the work was so easy he can do it with his eyes shut….HHhmmm a definite change to his UK school then!

We then visited the most incredible Beach Club that was as if Robinson Crusoe had joined the Ewok Village and created a Soho House members Club.

Amazing tree houses with tall palm trees and chilled music with stunning shell mobiles twinkling in the wind. Everyone sits on the decking watching the surfers at sunset - it’s an incredible place and we can't wait to return.
